Percussion & Drum Set Lessons
In percussion lessons, I help students begin their journeys behind the drum set, and sharpen their technique to master songs in a wide variety of genres. I approach drum instruction through a focus on written notation for solo snare drum as well as drum set. I also teach students how to master skills on keyboard percussion instruments including bell kit, Glockenspiel, xylophone, marimba, and vibraphone.
Drum Set
I have four years of experience guiding students through many stages of their development behind the drum set. Students enjoy playing their favorite songs, as well as discovering fun new music on the drums. I ground my drum set instruction in a variety of idioms including rock, funk, R&B, jazz, west African, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban music. We use written notation, and systematically master the mechanics of reading music. I help drummers explore creativity on the drum set, and assist my students in finding their own voice behind the kit.
I have helped families through the process of buying their first drum sets, as well as upgrading components of their home set ups. I teach drum students on standard drum sets and electronic drum sets.
While the bulk of my experience teaching drum set lessons lies with students aged 4-14, I also enjoy the opportunity to work with high school aged and adult learners! For more information about my background, see my Bio here.
Mallet Percussion
I can help you master music on xylophone, bell kit, Glockenspiel, marimba, and vibraphone. I'm seasoned at helping my students reach their goals and learn effective practice strategies. I hope to instill a love of music my students can keep for life. I love teaching percussion lessons to all students interested in learning.
Young Children
Some families wonder what instruments are a good fit for their young children. As opposed to instruments such as piano and guitar that require refined fine motor skills, percussion instruments utilize gross motor skills. This can make the drums a natural fit for many younger students.
I have experience teaching drum set lessons with Pre-K and Kindergarten students. The families I work with are happy to introduce their young children to enriching individual music instruction. For beginning drum lessons for 4 and 5 year olds, I require children to have a firm understanding of left vs right, along with the ability to read letters. For online lessons with these young children, I request a guardian be present during lessons to lend a helping hand.
