Music Theory Tutor
In music theory lessons, I provide students with a wide array of instruction on topics such as counterpoint, orchestration, harmony, voice leading, and ear training. We begin by learning language established in the Common Practice Period (1750-1900), and work to master knowledge of 20th century and contemporary music practices as well. Once mastering fundamentals, we explore advanced concepts of interest, e.g., late Romantic harmony, minimalism, tintinnabuli, spectralism, bitonality, process music, and jazz harmony.
My specialization lies in the practices of minimalist composers. I enjoy introducing my students to the processes developed by first generation minimalist composers Philip Glass and Arvo Pärt through their individual early, middle, and late period works. I continue to trace the development of minimalist processes by later generation composers John Adams, Max Richter, and Caroline Shaw. By detailing the processes used by these composers, we can absorb unique applications of harmony, counterpoint, keyboard voicing, and polyrhythms in modern art music.
I teach aural and written theory skills in engaging lessons through connecting topics to a wide array of repertoire. I can provide well-rounded tutoring to students in AP Music Theory and IB Music courses, as well as undergraduate music students looking to pass a theory placement exam. I provide support and enrichment for students of all levels, while working to instill a love of music that students can keep for life.
