Trumpet Lessons
Trumpet and Cornet
As a seasoned trumpet teacher in Decatur, GA, I help trumpet & cornet students of all abilities to refine their musicianship in fun and engaging lessons. "Time flies..." as I sometimes catch my students saying at the end of our lessons. I have experience guiding trumpet players through many stages of development, and offer lessons to children and adults of all levels.
As my beginning and intermediate students progress through their beginning method books, we supplement their music with a wide variety of other repertoire. While we focus on music from the classical canon and the jazz tradition, I routinely work with trumpet students in a wide array of genres including movie scores, rock, funk, musical theater, and Disney.
Classical Trumpet Music
As students progress into advanced studies, we further their skills by learning sonatas and etudes from the classical trumpet repertoire. By delving into advanced studies in concert music and method books, we're able to deepen our musicianship with increasingly technical music. Students gain knowledge in an array of musical settings through a combination of historic and contemporary music, ranging from Haydn and Hummel to today's concert and film music.
Performance Opportunities
I provide recital opportunities for all of my private students. Parent love witnessing their children learn valuable practice skills and succeed in performance opportunities. Students gain self confidence through performing their favorite songs in recitals. Since COVID began, we've already had two online recitals, which have been a great success. Online recitals allow family members and loved ones from all over the globe to attend!
Jazz & Improvisation
A United States president once quipped, "you cannot understand America if you don't understand jazz." I consider jazz not just a passion, but rather a focal point of my understanding of how music fits into the world at large. I love introducing students to the jazz tradition, and I teach jazz standards alongside classical works.
Although texts such as the Aebersold collection and the other improv methods books are valuable resources we use in our lessons, there is no substitute for deep listening to essential recordings. I guide students through the process of learning how to play along to their favorite recordings just by listening. No written music required! We dive into classic recordings along with today's music, and learn how to transcribe great solos. I introduce students to accompaniment music software like iReal and Band In A Box to help them practice songs with a rhythm section. I strongly recommend students play with their student-musician colleagues, as I see students can learn from each other constantly.
While the primary focus of my improvisation lessons is post-bop language, I enjoy helping students find their voice in idioms including swing, be-bop, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian jazz, funk, and more. I teach admiration of the jazz titans like Coltrane, Miles, and Ella, today's top talents such as Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall and Pat Metheny, as well as the young lions of jazz including Bria Skonberg, Kamasi Washington, and Shabaka Hutchings.

My Playing
|
Here's a recording of Amazing Grace. I love teaching students a wide variety of music throughout their development. During our lessons, my students learn classic songs they can keep for life. In this video, I also put reverb on my sound to create a long echo. I enjoy teaching my students how to use a computer to create the same effect at home. |
When Is The Right Age?
I recommend beginning trumpet instruction at age 9 or older. I don't recommend students age 8 or younger begin trumpet instruction since young children are still losing baby teeth. I enjoy working with students in grades 4-12, as well as adult learners!
